John 18:38b-40
“After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.”
๐ Pilate is a typical pragmatist. He attempts to negotiate an agreement that will diffuse the situation and cost him as little as possible. So, he told the Jewish leaders, “I don’t believe He’s guilty of anything you charge. Even so, you have a ‘get out of jail free’ card, you can let him go as your Passover tradition allows.” Pretty shrewd on Pilate’s part but the Jews would have not part of it. They would not rest until Jesus was dead and buried.
๐๐ผ Lord, God…I’ve never faced a serious “life” decision when you did not provide an answer…even when the dilemma was of my own making. I confess, I have not always followed you out of my troubles and I’ve sometimes made my problems worse. Help me to keep my eyes on you Jesus and follow wherever He leads. Amen.
