Now the
serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He
said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the
garden’?”
If a
stranger shows up unannounced and tries to move into the guest bedroom we don’t
engage in epistemological discussion. When he tries to assert his right to be
there we aren’t confused…we know the truth. He’s an interloper so we tell him
to leave…or we call 911.
Unless,
or course, we find something appealing in the stranger…
“Did
God really say?”
We’ve
been deceived by two big lies and we pay dearly.
The
first big lie from Satan was his insinuation into Eve’s relationship with
God. What was intended to be a sacred and intimate communion between two became
a party of three. Eve seems to have taken the intrusion in stride. Eve’s
response should have been “who are you?”
That
was her first mistake…
The
second big lie from Satan was that he factually misrepresented God. Since Eve
knew exactly what God had said she recognized the error. Eve seemed
willing to continue a dialogue with somebody who showed no regard for the
truth. Eve’s response should have been “Why are you mischaracterizing God?”
That
was her second mistake…
I
respect the fact that Adam and Eve had no experience with “craftiness“.
For them every situation was “a priori”. In their naiveté they
misunderstood Satan. They thought Satan was asking honest questions…to which
they wanted to offer honest answers. In the end, “craftiness” defeated “innocence”.
We know
better. The next time we hear the question “did God really say…?” we
know it didn’t originate with God…it came from an interloper. The correct
response should be “That’s none of your business”.
Live
boldly out there today…
