Emotional Incontinence: the fruit of Hypocrisy

”You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.”  MT 7:5

A video shot at ASU showed a young man screaming at a Republican campus group shortly after Trump’s acquittal. The young man was recorded screaming maniacally that he wanted to “slash the throat” of Trump and every conservative and Republican.

I call it “emotional incontinence”.

Expressing a desire to terrorize and kill those who disagree is frightening and dangerous. It demonstrates a lack or impulse control that has already transgressed the outer limits of civilized society. More importantly, can we have any confidence that a person like this is able to abide any limits whatsoever? After all, that’s the problem with incontinence: the ability to choose has been lost.

I’ve heard some people blame our president for fomenting this acerbic divisive culture...using the most vile language and epithets I’m sure they were using long before they knew of Trump. We know better. We’ve seen this coming for decades and done nothing about it. So, the people who are “out of control” have taken control.

We must all condemn such behavior regardless of the source. This is not a political, cultural or social problem. It is a spiritual problem that has only spiritual solutions. I discourage all of us from thinking we can some day stand before God and say “God, I would have been better but...” it didn’t work for Adam when he said “But Lord, the woman you gave me told me to eat the fruit”.

Trump will pay for his sin and I will pay for mine. Unless, of course, we both kneel before the cross and trust the Blood of Christ to wash it away. The amazing reality is this...when I recognize my own guilt and ponder God’s forgiveness...I no longer have it in my heart to hate Donald Trump...or anybody.

A recrudescence of the human spirit...

You see...it’s always about me owning my own attitude and behavior rather than judging others. As Jesus said, “3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.”  MT 7:3-5

Live boldly out there today...
